Joann Mitchell Scholarship for History Students

Joann Mitchell was a Sonoma County historical powerhouse.

She served on the board of the Museum of Sonoma County, on the board of the Sonoma County Historical Society and on the Sonoma County Landmarks Commission. Her interests in education included many years on the Bennett Valley School Board. Joann was a coauthor on two key volumes: Santa Rosa: A Nineteenth Century Town and Santa Rosa: A Twentieth Century Town. Joann lived in Santa Rosa from 1958 until her death in 2023 at age 91. She left funds for scholarships to history majors at Santa Rosa Junior College and Sonoma State University.

The Scholarships are being administered by the Museum of Sonoma County with the assistance of the Sonoma County Historical Society. Applicants must be majoring in History and preference will be given to those studying western US history. The $1,000 one-time scholarships will be awarded in the spring of 2024 and distributed in August of 2024.

Recipients will be required to confirm continuing enrollment prior to being presented funds. Applicants must be enrolled at SRJC or SSU as a lower-division, upper-division or graduate student in the Fall of 2024. High school seniors who will enroll at one of the two schools in the Fall of 2024 and who will major in history are welcome to apply. Recipients will be invited to attend (and are strongly encouraged to attend) a reception at the Museum of Sonoma County at a date to be determined and to attend the Annual Luncheon of the Sonoma County Historical Society in 2025.

The scholarships may be used for expenses related to their area of academic interest, including books and other publications, or travel for research or to attend professional conferences. A one-page application and one-page written statement will be used in the evaluation process.            Deadline to submit is April 20, 2024.
