Film Screening of Wildfires Through the Heartwood, The New Normal, and Firestorm: The First 12 Hours

1/6/2019 from 11:30 AM to 1:00 PM PT

A film screening of three films, SoCo Dance Theater's Wildfires Through the Heartwood KRCB's The New Normal: Visions of Healing, and Firestorm: The First 12 Hours. KRCB reporter Adia White will introduce The New Normal, and Producer/Choreographer Nancy Lyons will introduce Wildfire Through the Heartwood.

Wildfires Through the Heartwood features dances before and after the October fires in Root 101, Bruce Johnson's Sculpture Garden at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts. Many of the sculptures were damaged in the fire. The two films, before and after the fires, are woven together and include narration by Bruce Johnson and Brenda Lopez, who lost her home in Coffey Park.

The New Normal looks at our community one year after the October fires that killed 44 and obliterated neighborhoods in Santa Rosa and the surrounding towns. The filmmakers visit musicians, poets and visual artists who are trying to represent the calamity in ways that promote resiliency, and talk with members of the Latino community and supporters, who demand that next time, our Spanish speaking and undocumented neighbors aren’t left behind. Filled with music, poetry, art and love, the film responds to the “new normal,” where climate change threatens our lives and livelihoods.

50+Films is proud to present a short film, Firestorm: The First 12 Hours. In this preview of their feature film, a fire ecologist, a firefighter, a daughter and a radio personality talk about what they saw, felt and did during the first 12 hours of the Wine Country Fires. Level-headed actions, emotional responses and a sense of community responsibility compelled these four people to do extraordinary things. Please join us to listen to their stories and experiences of the 2017 Firestorm as well as their messages of hope and recovery for our community.
