Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) is a joyous remembrance of the lives of family members and loved ones who have passed and a celebration of the cycle of life. The holiday is celebrated on November 1st and 2nd throughout Latin America, but is more closely associated with Mexico, where it originated.

This year, the Museum's annual Día de los Muertos exhibition is presented in the Museum's Sculpture Garden for the first time. The outdoor exhibition echoes the setting of many Day of the Dead observances in Mexico which often take place in cemeteries. The exhibition provides a place to remember the people we have lost, whether in 2020 or in years past. The exhibition features altars and artwork designed and created by Peter Perez, Mario Uribe, Liz Camino-Byers, Scott Daniel Braun, and Martín Zúñiga, along with contributions from community participants. We are also proud to include special works made in past years by the Museum's Youth+Art students.

El Día de los Muertos es una conmemoración gozosa de las vidas de familiares y seres queridos que han pasado a mejor vida y una celebración del ciclo de la vida. El día festivo se celebra el 1o y 2 de noviembre a lo largo y ancho de Latinoamérica, pero se asocia más cercanamente a México, donde se originó.

Este año, la exhibición anual del museo del Día de los Muertos tendrá lugar en el jardín escultórico por primera vez. La exhibición al aire libre nos lleva al entorno de muchas observancias del Día de los Muertos en México que se llevan a cabo en los cementerios. La exhibición proporciona un lugar para recordar a los seres que hemos perdido, sea en el 2020 o en años pasados. La exhibición muestra altares y obras de arte diseñadas y creadas por Peter Perez, Mario Uribe, Liz Camino-Byers, Scott Daniel Braun, and Martín Zúñiga, junto con contribuciones de participantes de la comunidad. También estamos orgullosos de incluir obras especiales hechas en años pasados por los estudiantes de Youth+Art del museo.

At-Home Activities

Presented in partnership with the Children's Museum of Sonoma County

Enjoy making these fun crafts at home! When finished, add them to your own altars (ofrendas) or bring them to the Museum of Sonoma County to display in the Día de los Muertos exhibition, once it opens to the public on October 22.

The migrating monarch butterflies that return south to Mexico during the winter are believed to carry the spirits of the deceased home.
Candles are lit and placed on altars (ofrendas) during Día de los Muertos to help guide returning spirits home.

 

Memory Portrait 2020

This year, Día de los Muertos is highlighting submissions from Memory Portrait 2020, an online gallery of community-submitted portraits of the dearly departed. Memory Portrait 2020 is an art project open to all ages. Participants are asked to create a visual media portrait of a friend, family member, pet, hero, or loved one who has passed.
 
All submissions will be displayed in our online gallery on the exhibition webpage, beginning October 22, 2020. Additional submissions will be added to the gallery every Thursday through the run of the exhibition (November 8, 2020).

Retrato-Recuerdo 2020

Este año, Día de los Muertos también destacará muestras de Retrato-Recuerdo 2020, una galería en línea de retratos creados por miembros de la comunidad de sus fieles difuntos. Retrato-Recuerdo 2020 es un proyecto de arte abierto a todas las edades. Se les pide a los participantes que creen un retrato con medios audiovisuales de un amigo, familiar, mascota, héroe o ser querido que haya fallecido.

 
Todas las obras se mostrarán en nuestra galería virtual en la página web de la exposición, a partir del 22 de octubre de 2020. Se agregarán presentaciones adicionales a la galería todos los jueves durante el transcurso de la exposición (8 de noviembre de 2020). Se mostrará el nombre del artista, a menos que esté marcado como anónimo.

2020 Día de los Muertos Exhibition FAQ

 

Q: Is it a virtual or in-person exhibition?
A: The 2020 Día de los Muertos Exhibition is an in-person exhibition, presented in the outdoor sculpture garden with free admission from October 22-November 8, 2020. A virtual version of the exhibition will also be available shortly after the opening.

 

Q: Is the 2020 Día de los Muertos Members' Opening Reception a virtual or in-person event?
A: The members' opening reception is a virtual event via Zoom. While visitors can view the outdoor exhibition in person, we do not want to encourage a gathering of dozens of people. We look forward to celebrating the opening of the exhibition with our members from the comfort and safety of their homes.

 

Q: What are the regular hours?
A: Thursday-Sunday, 10:00am-1:00pm (see next question for exclusions/evening hours).

 

Q: When are the evening hours?
A: From Saturday, October 31 (Halloween) through Monday, November 2, we will be open from 4:00-7:00pm only.

Q: Do I need to reserve tickets in advance?
A: No, we are not offering timed-ticketing for this exhibition, though capacity limitations are in place. If we reach capacity, there may be a slight wait.

 

Q: ¿Se presentará en inglés o en español?
A: ¡Los dos!

 

Q: Can I contribute my own offerings?
A: Yes! Visitors are invited to bring miniature altars in a box, copies of photos, flowers, LED lights, and other items to contribute to the community altars (no open flames, please). Items can be added during exhibition hours and picked up in the final days of the exhibition. The Museum of Sonoma County is not responsible for any loss or damage to objects left in the exhibition.

 

Q: What safety precautions are you taking?
A: To ensure a safe and enjoyable visit, we have implemented the following visitor protocols:
• Limited capacity
• Social distancing required
• Facial coverings required
• Drinking fountains and restrooms closed
• Hand sanitizer is available
• No pets, please (service animals only)
